When organizations conduct their own internal audits to satisfy organizational requirements, there is a danger that the person responsible to produce health and safety, fire safety, environmental, security and business continuity, are the very same person conducting the self-assessment. Many organizations see this as being a cost-effective approach. Here are some questions to ask:
- How effective would this self-assessment be?
- How objective and forthright would the findings be?
- How would the person know whether they’re current with legislation or the recognized best practices?
No one likes to communicate negative findings to their line management and executives, it doesn’t assist with self-promotion or managerial confidence. The arrangements will only be as effective as the person who wrote them.
To avoid the temptation to mark ‘one’s homework’, responsible persons should consider and explain the value of bringing in an external independent auditor, who can conduct an assessment with prejudice or fear of retribution. This is where we can help you!
